Materials
-
We use next-gen, plant-based materials that are certified biodegradable. The design is simplified with fewer components, and production happens in a closed-loop system where water is recycled and no harmful chemicals escape. They're built to look classic, feel comfortable, and tread lighter on the planet.
-
It's grown, not made. The upper comes from fungi, a natural fibre network called mycelium. It builds itself cell by cell into an interlocking weave that humans can’t replicate in a lab. It’s strong, light, and completely plastic-free.
-
Most vegan leather is just plastic. Usually PU or PVC, sometimes coated in PFAS. That glossy finish is made using chemicals. Ours is plant-based and breathable, plastic-free and grown, not coated.
-
They’re a new type of material replacing leather and plastic, made through clean chemistry from renewable sources. The texture might feel different. A bit firmer initially, but they break in over time, and they perform equally well without nasty plastic or toxins.
Sustainability & Impact
-
We make next wave footwear. Bio-based materials grown from nature, closed-loop production where water recycles, and zero toxins leak out. We only do intentionally small runs to cut waste. Fewer shoes produced means minimal waste. And we give you a way to return them to nature when you’re done. We’re trying to make progress with a point.
-
Most components are certified biodegradable. The sole is 51% natural rubber for durability. The long-term goal is a fully compostable version. We’re working on it. Watch this space.
-
The upper is bio-based and plastic-free. Made from plant and fungal fibres mixed with natural latex and cellulose. Under the right conditions—heat, oxygen, microbial activity—they break down naturally. No toxic residue, no microplastics left behind.
-
Not yet. The sole is 51% natural rubber mixed with synthetics. Basically, 100% natural rubber breaks down too fast under heavy wear. We mix natural rubber with recycled and synthetic components for grip and longevity. We’re working to push that bio-based ratio higher over time.
-
Recycling keeps plastic in rotation. We’re trying to replace it. Our shoes use bio-based materials that biodegrade instead of petrochemicals that last forever.
-
It’s planning with the end in mind first. Materials are bio-based and certified biodegradable, made to decompose naturally. What doesn’t decompose gets reused or recycled.
-
Kind of. We need real-world use and return data first, then we’ll do a full Product Life Cycle Assessment. Right now, we track every component through our verified Bill of Materials to stay transparent and keep pushing toward fully certified biodegradability.
-
Send them back to us through our New Growth Stream. We’ll break down each component for reuse, recycling, or composting. You’ll get a credit toward your next pair.
Durability & Perfomance
-
Not at all. They’ve been put through it. More than 100,000 flex cycles in the lab, plus real wear testing in schools. They pass the same durability standards as high-end leather footwear across strength, abrasion and flex.
-
Yeah. They start slightly firm, then soften naturally as they shape to your foot. Kind of like leather. No plastic coatings means even softening, no cracking or peeling. Our testers say it feels like a comfortable sneaker, not a stiff formal shoe.
-
They’re tested for rough use. Even though they feel like it, they aren’t sports shoes. Breaking a sweat in 35°C heat will wreck any material faster, even leather. Wear athletic shoes for sport, keep Make Good for off days and long walks. Podiatrists will vouch for that, too.
Comfort & Care
-
They’re designed by a podiatrist on an athletic last. They feel more like sneakers than dress shoes. True to size with room to grow. Wide feet fit comfortably, but if you have a narrow foot, add an insole for a better fit. Custom orthotics will go straight in.
-
Yep. Fibre structure lets air and moisture pass through, so feet stay cooler and drier all day. That’s what happens when you remove plastic coatings. Material breathes instead of sealing everything in.
-
School, work, weekends. The classic black lace-ups handle all dress codes. Versatile for classroom, office, or a day in the studio. Durable for daily wear, wherever you do good.

The Derbys are made from materials that respond best to natural care. To clean, wipe with a damp cloth and air dry naturally. No heat. No harsh chemicals. To condition, skip solvent or petroleum-based polishes. Use natural black polish or plant-based conditioner to restore colour and maintain suppleness. Our signature matte finish is because of the plastic-free qualities of the material.
